E-5 is a noncommissioned officer grade in every branch. Many members reach it after about 3 to 6 years of service, depending on the job and the branch.

How much does an E-5 make in 2027?

With over 6 years of service, E-5 basic pay is projected at $4,258.00 a month in 2027 ($51,096.00 a year), up from $4,110.00 in 2026. The projection uses the 3.6% raise from the legal formula; the official 2027 schedule is not out yet.

When does E-5 pay stop going up?

In the 2026 schedule, E-5 basic pay reaches its top rate of $4,421.70 a month at over 12 years of service. After that, more years do not raise E-5 basic pay; promotion does.

Does E-5 basic pay include housing and food?

No. Food (BAS) and housing (BAH) are separate, tax-free allowances paid on top of basic pay. BAS is $476.95 a month in 2026; BAH depends on your duty station ZIP code and dependents, for example $1,806.00 for an E-5 with dependents in the Fort Bragg/Pope, NC area.
